FREEDOM MURAL - THE ORANGE COMPANY 2022
I had the pleasure of running yet another community art project, in which we created a stunning mural stretching across two office spaces, from the foyer to the main lounge area, for The Orange Company in Helsinki, Finland in January 2022.
The improvisational work was named Vapaus (Freedom) by 10 year old Frida, one of the 45 participants working on the piece during the two week period. People of all ages and backgrounds painted and drew everything from crocodiles to sailboats and muffins, whilst having a snack and conversing about life.

PORTRAITS

GIVE THE GIFT OF A PORTRAIT
Portraits can hold time in place. No matter what your circumstances are in life the eyes or atmosphere of the portrait draw you back to that celebration - that moment, that you, that loved one.
It's almost as though the spirit of a person has been momentarily infused onto the canvas creating an imprint and set to remain.
"I feel that not only do the eyes of the subject matter look at you, but the lips, nostrils, earlobes and brow look as well.
Transferring feeling onto canvas...I hope to be able to do that.
My clients' happiness is what counts. Ultimately it's a gift of love from me to the them and from them to their loved ones.
Corny...? Not at all. "
- Sanna, 23.5.2018

NEO-ABORIGINAL STYLE
Sanna has been working with a decorative style which combines the use of acrylic paints and paint markers, beads and sequins and waste materials such as styrofoam. She calls it her Neo-Aboriginal style. Unaware of it at first, she noticed similarities with that of Australian Aboriginal artwork, i.e. dots playing a primary role in creating shapes and flowing patterns that unify the piece. In these pieces her subject matter is never planned, but rather a result of improvisation. To view more Neo-Aboriginal pieces click here.

me-talo in mellunmäki 2016

Sanna was asked to facilitate art workshops at the Me-talo in Helsinki during the Spring of 2016.
The Me-talo ('our house') is a warmhearted, open, community centre for local residents in the eastern suburb of Mellunmäki in Helsinki. The project brings together people of all walks of life to join in and create two collaborative murals in the general facilities of the house - the main entrance and the 'chill out room'.
Painting began mid-April 2016. The project is made up of two teams: the graffiti team and the collaborative team, the latter facilitated by Sanna and her colleague Lari Rantalainen. See more about the Me-talo art project here.

INCORPORATING FUN INTO YOUR CORPORATE STRATEGY DAY

During Friday 28th of August 2015 SANNA facilitated an art workshop for Wareco's building engineers and staff members at the picturesque Villa Kallioniemi in Laajasalo, Helsinki.
The Finnish renovations company presented their strategic plans, after which staff and management alike participated in a mutual painting session whilst enjoying snacks and beverages. In total the 25 participants produced 5 unique collaborative pieces to be hung within the walls of the company's facilities. The day was complete with delicious barbecue cooking and the heat of the sauna enjoyed by the lovely seaside of Laajasalo.
Being creative in a group unites individuals and strengthens team building, which in turn ultimately enforces positive company spirit. This was evident at the art workshops for Wareco Oy.
Feel free to order an art workshop tailor made for your business needs.

teens BRINGING COLOUR INTO CONSTRUCTION

During the spring of 2015 Sanna gathered a small team of creative young adults to give Finnish renovations and building expert Rakennus Oy Wareco a modern new look. Phase one has now been completed.
With her supervision the team of three students are transforming plain construction site containers into lively works of urban art, where abstract shapes flow over corrugated iron and colourful squares morph into imaginary buildings. Their themes can also be seen on massive scaffolding covers temporarily hiding the facades of buildings which are undergoing renovations during the summer.
The aim of the Wareco Facelift project is to give typically mundane and often drab construction sites a more appealing and fun feel, particularly since summer is peak season for the renewal of urban environments in Finland - so why not bring summer brightness onto the surfaces of the building sites too!
For more information about the project click here. Please feel free to visit Wareco Oy at their website www.wareco.fi

VIDEO TRILOGY POHDINTOJA I, II & III (REFLECTIONS)
SANNA has embarked on a 'live art' video trilogy entitled Pohdintoja I, II & III (Reflections I, II & III). Although the video titles are in Finnish the video narration is in English, with minor parts including some Finnish and Greek. Pohdintoja I was released early in 2014, Pohdintoja II was released on 22.10.2014 and Pohdintoja III on 15.6.2015. Her video art is based on footage captured on her mobile phone of repetitive themes which she enjoys exploring, such as trying to catch the unseen, 'in the act' so to speak, around the corner (challenging the existence of the unheard and unseen) and the wrapping of presents. Her narrative themes include solipsism, dark matter, the art of manifestation and listing some of her favourite things.
Note: it is important to use headphones when listening to the Pohdintoja series for intimacy and full effect. Pohdintoja III should not be listened to when driving as it may cause drowsiness.

ART WORKSHOPS
A unique art technique called Kimppakuvitus ('shared illustration') was invented by Sanna and her colleague Sinivuokko Koivula. Using the Kimppakuvitus method Sanna has facilitated several art workshops with clients ranging from priests from local parishes to kindergarteners, teens, drug addicts, the visually impaired, refugees, special needs children and youth, senior citizens and construction workers, as well as other various members of the general public. All in all Sanna has run workshops and live painting events for around 1800 people.
She has conducted these projects in cooperation with the Helsinki City Cultural Centre, local schools and companies. These projects include Taidepolku (Art Path) (SRV Rakennus Oy), Minä - Unelmista arkeen ja takaisin (Cultural Centre Annantalo), MUKANA (Cultural Centre Stoa) and Watts On the Wall 2012 & 2013 (Ministry of Culture and Education).
The MUKANA art workshops were conducted for a variety of target groups, ranging from the blind to kindergarteners and immigrants. In addition to running art workshops Sanna co-facilitated a live painting event open to the public on Sunday 26.10.2014 as part of the anniversary celebrations at Cultural Centre Stoa. With a total of over 200 local residents participating in the project the extensive MUKANA art project came together in a prestigious exhibition displaying all 21 collaborative works of art at the Stoa Gallery 9.12.2014 - 4.1.2015.

The joint exhibition Blobs 'n' Scraps with colleague Sinivuokko
Koivula focusing on the recycling of waste materials into works
of art (e.g. utilizing dried blobs of acrylic paint) was held at Kalleria Gallery in 2012.
The exhibition contained 24 works of 'Eco-art' created by Sanna.
Eco-art emerged from the her need to make use of dried excess acrylic paints left over in the process of painting portraits etc.
Each piece tells a comical story of its own and almost always containing a bird in one form or another.
